I create images that did not previously exist, using photography as my foundation. Parts of what appears in my work are rooted in truth, while the rest is constructed. The subject I see begins to diverge from reality the moment I begin to photograph it, and onto that divergence, I project my gaze and intention to complete the image. I believe that what we call reality is constructed within the frameworks of language and image. My work seeks to disrupt those frameworks through a form I call fantasy. My photographs are not evidence of a solid world, but loosely assembled structures of fragments that can never be fully secured.
나는 사진으로, 존재하지 않던 이미지를 만들어내는 작업을 한다.
내 작업 속 대상의 일부는 진실이고, 나머지는 가공된 이미지다.
내가 보는 피사체는 촬영 행위로부터 현실과 어긋나기 시작하며,
그 위에 나의 시선과 의도를 투영해 하나의 이미지를 완성한다.
내가 보는 현실은 언어와 이미지의 틀 속에서 구성된 것이라 믿는다.
나는 그 틀을 ‘판타지’라는 형식으로 어긋나게 한다.
내 사진은 단단한 세계의 증거가 아니라,
결코 견고할 수 없는 파편들이 느슨하게 조립된 구조물이다.
[Biography]
Bosung Kim (b. 1974) earned his M.A. in Studio Art from NYU Steinhardt (2004) and attended the Skowhegan residency before beginning his editorial career in New York with VOGUE GIRL in 2004. For over two decades he has moved between magazines and advertising campaigns, working with VOGUE, GQ, ELLE, and Noblesse. He was named Photographer of the Year by the Fashion Group International (FGI) in 2012 and selected as a Canon Master in 2024. His fine-art practice includes the solo exhibition Color Me Red; Thresholds (FF Seoul, 2025–2026). He is a professor of Photography & Video at Kyungil University, where he leads the Commercial Lab, CEO of PLAY STUDIO Inc., and president of the Korean Fashion Photographers Association.
